Pitts Home Ranch Estate Zinfandel 2013
Although this wine is very opaque red in color, this is a hugely aromatic and flavorful Zin. Floral, juicy black pepper and perfumed red cherry fruit run this show.
Similar to the well-received 2011 Pitts Home Ranch Zin, the '13 comes out swinging with huge black pepper and a solid backstop of floral red cherry. While black pepper and red fruit represent the core, floral potpourri and spicy perfume trim out this wine, making it one of the most complex and interesting Zins we've crafted. The above average night temperatures softened the acidic backbone, allowing for early enjoyment, but will taste even better with a few years in the bottle. As always. This wine is the culmination of 13 years of focus and attention to detail on the 5 acre block located on the Estate. It's ready right. now. Enjoy!
In 2013, the Russian River Valley experienced near-perfect weather conditions. Above average temperatures during the day and slightly above average temperaturea t night offer a fuller-bodied, riper approach than a normal Harvest Moon Zin. The vineyard for this wine is meticulously managed in order to concentrate the sugars in the grapes, offering the most intense aromas and flavors possible. Approximately 35% of the clusters are thinned (dropped on the ground) and many leaves are pulled to allow sun and airflow through, further concentrating the flavors. We harvested this block over the course of a month as to capture various flavors ranging from tart cran-cherry and pepper (25%) to juicy dark raspberry (40%) to ripe dark fruit and more pepper (35%). The three lots were aged separately for the first year in 100% neutral oak, then blended and aged an additional 8 months in barrel for a May 2015 unfiltered bottling.
5% new Radaux hybrid french/american oak, 95% neutral, mature oak aging vessels. 20 months in wood.
