Pitts Home Ranch Estate Zinfandel 2008
Spicy, red fruit with gobs of cranberries and cherry. Long juicy finish.
In 2008, Russian River Valley Zin hung on the vine for a very long time and was harvested with the least amount of sugar ever in Harvest Moon's existence. The result? Amazingly perfumey, spicy, racey fruit with gobs of cherry and cranberry. Age ability? 5-8 years... easy.
The 2008 growing season was one of wild fluctuations in weather patterns and natural disasters. Beginning with a warmer-than-usual bud break in March, the vines got off to a solid start. However, late Spring frost burnt some of the delicate baby foliage, causing us to ultimately harvest approximately 30% less fruit than in 2007. In mid June, there were a huge number of forest fires located in sparse regions of Mendocino County, covering the NorCal sky with a thick orange-ish haze for what felt like 4-weeks. Although the "smoke taint" was not present in most Sonoma /County wines, it did affect the type of sunlight that shined on the grapes during that key time in the grapes' photosynthetic cycle. The fire haze, coupled ith slightly cooler-than-average temp's, allowed the clusters to ripen over a longer period of time while maintaining relatively lower sugar content.
