The 2009 season was framed by cool weather and good development in the vineyard. The fruit gained a high concentration of flavor as well as good acidity. The heat spells were moderate, the cold troughs were shallow, and the bunches looked picture perfect falling into the bins. The season was perfectly uneventful until Monday, October 12th when the greater Sonoma County region saw nearly 4" of torrential rain! The last time Sonoma saw this much rain so early in October was in 1961. Needless to say, farmers and winemakers alike were scrambling to get as much fruit off the vine and into the fermentors as possible. Fortunately, we only had our dessert wine left on the vine, which benefits from a little mold. This was a vintage that rewards a winemaking style like Harvest Moons', as we pick our grapes earlier than others seeking lower sugars in the grape and ultimately, lower alcohols and more delicate, juicy flavors in our wines. Farming is a humbling experience.
